Allowing Room for Poker Strategy Deviation
One of the most difficult things that a new player must learn how to do in Poker is change his playing style and tactics, depending on the game situation. This is something that even seasoned players have a hard time doing, but with the proper insights you will be able to accomplish it.
Of course, not all instances should one deviate from his Poker strategy. Raising pre flop in Limit Holdem with AK, KK and QQ should always be used, even if you end up on the flop and lose the game. In 5 Card Draw and 7 Card Stud, you always play high pairs to get the trips, and nothing should change this approach even if you lose consecutive hands in a row.
Even if you get a Bad Beat with these Poker strategies, you should still adhere to them; you lost not because there is anything fundamentally wrong with your tactics; your opponent just got lucky with the draw, and in Poker, that sometimes happens.
However, that being said, you have to recognize that there will be instances when you should. For example, you are playing a $2 limit 7 Card Stud. If the table is tight, then the approach is to be tight aggressive; with this tactic, you will in most instances take the pot down with high hands very quickly.
But what if the players are more loose/passive? If most of the players raise the bring in to $3 or more, then you will not be able to win much because you are playing only premium hands. On the occasions that you do get a premium hand and raise to the maximum, they will fold. You will end up winning a small pot.
The proper Poker strategy of course, is to change your approach. Widen your hand selection at the start, to give your hand more opportunities, and also avoid being too aggressive early on as this will cause the others to fold quickly, leaving you with very little to win.
Also, your Poker strategy should also take into account that the proper time to raise would be when you are in the later streets, because by that time, the other players on the table would have thrown in a lot of money in the pot. By the time you make the big raise, they will not be in a position to back out, as they have committed a lot of money already.
Changing your Poker playing style is something that you will not learn in any guide, because the only way you can truly grasp it is by playing. What you must do is to learn how to gauge the players on the table.
This will enable to make the proper judgment. This will take a while to master, but by playing Poker continuously you will be able to grasp the fundamentals and use it to your advantage.
